On May 18th 1980 Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington State. Where were you?
I was camping with my father in the mountains to the east of Bellevue where we lived at the time. Not exactly sure where we were other than to the north of Mount St Helens and near a smaller lake where we were trying to catch trout. We woke at the crack of dawn, fished for a while --- caught nothing, and went back to bed. It seemed a sunny day at dawn, but when we woke up it was a eerie gray sky. We packed up and drove into the nearest town where they had the highway blocked leading back to the west(?) into the Bellevue/Seattle area. Thankfully my father at the time was full of piss n vinegar and was able to drive on the wrong side of the highway around the barricades and back down the mountains to home where the ash started to accumulate, but not substantially --maybe an inch or so.
we were thankful it turned out just an interesting story. may ask my father if he recalls that little town we were near up in the mountains -- he is in pretty bad physical shape but his mental faculties are still fair.
And I find it interesting that we share some of the same past experiences and also that is was around 1980 or '81, living in up there in Washington, that I was first introduced to the UFO/Alien world. Of course, books back then that i retrieved from the school library (?). Not exactly sure about this but cannot think of any other place I obtained books from. Needless to say, a subject in the front of my mind ever since.
I remember being in a Safeway in CA hearing about it on the radio. Was about the same time that the other biggest news story in America was that J.R. had been shot on the season finale of Dallas. Was also about the same time I got Pink Floyd's The Wall album.
Yes, I remember that event. My brother was driving a semi-truck in the area. Scary thing for him. He brought back some ash. Glad he got out of there in one piece. Epic event and in a part of our country that is so beautiful. Enjoy your day!

If i had to guess, we were somewhere up Hwy 90 toward Snoqualmie Pass because that is where we always seemed to head when going into the mountains
We didn't get too much ash in Kirkland, but eastern Wa got it big time. Glad your dad said, F this and got out.

Oh, and Stanly Kubrick's The Shining was released in the theaters 5 days after she blew.
Wow. I think it was filmed in Oregon not far from Mt. St. Helen
Yes, theTimberline Lodge sits on the south slope of Mt. Hood.
